Tales from the High Seas: Under the Waterfall

A beautiful hidden waterfall on the magic island of Dominica

This wonderful tale was shared by Carina of TradeWinds.
A sailing vacation is so much more than just sailing. Land excursions, opportunities to hike, run, and zip line are the experiences that add a zest of excitement to the vacation. At TradeWinds, we don’t just travel, we EXPLORE!
When I worked as a Chef onboard,  I remember anchoring in the charming village of Portsmouth on Dominica’s north western point, and going on a little island tour of Dominica.  We asked our guests to bring along a beach towel and a swimsuit, just in case. Up in the mountains and the lush, dense rainforest flew green parrots – what a sight! At one point, we stopped close to a trail and hiked our way to the waterfalls. The cool scent of the jungle, the water stream rushing by and the sounds getting noisier as we grew closer gave us the adrenaline kick that comes when adventure is right around the corner.
In the clearing we discovered  a beautiful and noisy waterfall. All of a sudden we were rushing to get changed, huddling in towels and into swimsuits. We all wanted to be the first in! No matter how professional a  group of adults are, we all can turn into kids in a heartbeat. The group of new found friends were  jumping up and down, screaming, laughing and getting wet It was a day full of the true joy of an experience – so much fun and like Garry often says; Isn’t FUN the best thing to have!!
Thank you Dusty DuBois for a stunning photo of what I believe is that very same waterfall!!

TradeWinds Photo of the Week: Humpback Whales off Anguilla

Every Monday on TradeWinds World we will be sharing a beautiful photo from a TradeWinds adventure. Feel free to Facebook your own favourite TradeWinds pic on our page, and we might even feature it here as our photo of the week!

When you see whales, they touch your heart and heal your soul. These whales were so inquisitive, as we turned the catamaran around thinking we would follow them gently at a distance, they too turned around and came towards us. Then we circled each other, almost like a graceful dance, the whales and the TradeWinds catamaran. It felt as if they were inviting us to join them for some play in the water. We were all so excited onboard and felt so privileged to have the interaction which must have lasted for a good ten minutes. Video footage and plenty of photos were taken until this photographer decided to just put the camera down and connect with every fiber in my body. What we were experiencing was so unique and so precious.

There is nothing more lovely than the moon rising over the water and this week’s photo is of just that, taken from a TradeWinds catamaran yacht off the island of Anguilla, with a view of St. Maarten/St. Martin in the distance. A perfect start to the week – don’t you wish you were there?

Tales from the High Seas: Easter Eggs & Catamarans

Happy Easter from the TradeWinds team!

As Easter fast approaches,  We at TradeWinds have a funny memory from 2001 to share. We were heading out on charter in Bequia, the Grenadines. No eggs arrived with our weekly food order from the Supermarket on the mainland in St Vincent! We had two catamarans heading out with 10 guests and 2 crew members, on each yacht.
TradeWinds offers a fine food & beverage fair onboard, and of course eggs are among the staples we require. That year our menu called for eggs to be used in the delicious portholes we serve at breakfast time, for the quiches and for the dessert crepes. However – NO eggs could be found, anywhere, they’d all been sold out! Caramaba – what to do now??
The lovely Sheila, our only office staff at that time,  desperately called in a brigade of friends, one of whom was Gideon, our trusted taxi driver who set off visiting his aunts, cousins, friends to see if their chicken MIGHT have any newly laid eggs. Willy, the talented coconut- jewellry maker searched relatives’ chicken coops on the mainland of St. Vincent, in the dark with a flashlight! Marley, the local ‘lime guy’ in Bequia, checked in with his Rasta Root friends’ chickens latest activities. And on and on we searched…
Sheila diligently collected 3 eggs here, 5 eggs there… We found just enough eggs to be able to make the most important dishes. That is the true definition of TradeWinds teamwork, and what a fun story we got to talk about onboard.
Happy easter egg hunting from the TradeWinds crew!

TradeWinds Crew Bio: Trevor & Carla

A fine dinner onboard 'Dream Catcher' with Captain Trevor and Carla - Photo by Christina Uhlin

Captain Trevor and his wife, First Mate Carla are a wonderful couple with a vibrant zest for life and adventure! TradeWinds‘ fleet of catamarans are mainly sailing catamarans,  with the exception of one motor vessel. Aptly named ‘Dream Catcher’, she can fly steadily over the ocean at 20 knots.

Trevor, an avid fisherman, shares his knowledge and tactics! Photo by Christina Uhlin

Captain Trevor Kay is a seasoned skipper with a vast knowledge of the Caribbean.  Cap’n Trev skippered “Turquoise Dreams” for many years and even did some exploratory trips to the Bahamas and Turks and Caicos for TradeWinds.  He has always been involved with the sea, one way or the other, having a fishing charter company back in Knysna, South Africa.

It was there where his extreme interest in the Humpback and Southern Right whales began.  He studied these whales in the Southern Oceans for 5 years and eventually got the boat based whale watching industry established in South Africa.  During this period Trevor, an avid fisherman, also achieved numerous fishing records, an 82lbs Callorhincus, a 122lbs Atlantic Sailfish which at the time was a world record and a Black Musselcraker of 90lbs in the Southern Cape, to mention but a few.  Eventually Trevor crossed the Indian Ocean passing the Cape of Good Hope into the Atlantic on a 33ft sloop with a 75 year old Scottish gentleman and ended up in the Caribbean (St Maarten) where the warm weather and clear waters have held him since.

First Mate Carla Farinacci Kay: Was born in Zambia of Italian/British parents but lived most of her life in South Africa.  Carla’s culinary interests were inspired by her Italian background, being influenced from a very young age by her Mother and Italian Grandmother. She loves experimenting with new ingredients, of which there is an abundance of in the Caribbean.  After her children were born she eventually ventured out into the hospitality trade, having worked at various Hotels and Restuarants, gaining important knowledge not only in the culinary department, but also how to be a graceful hostess.  Carla loves to swim and snorkel especially in shallow areas and has appointed herself as a “Snorkel Master”!  She also has a keen interest in underwater photography and has created an impressive photo album.

Many thanks to Christina Uhlin for her beautiful photographs!

Buried Treasure: Petite Terre Islands – “Islands of the small Land”

Jannica, TradeWinds Quality & Service manager brings guest Susanne ashore by dinghy

In our regular column Buried Treasure, we share some of our favourite secret places and things in the Caribbean and beyond that the TradeWinds crew have discovered over the years. Happy sailing!

Petite Terre is an archipelago of two islands, Terre de Haut and Terre de Bas, separated by a channel with transparent water. Perfectly flat, these islands rising to 17 meters above the sea is the domain of a large colony of iguanas,  crabs and many varieties of birds. Since 1994 the islands are safe guarded as Nature Reserve parks and therefore, hunting and fishing are prohibited.

An old lighthouse overlooks the large lagoon that separates the two islets. Behind it, water squirts out with high pressure through the blowing holes where the sea rushes in.

Tresure map of Nature! Petite Terre

For all visitors, Petite Terre  is a source of wonder. The white sand beaches are most pristine and feels exquisitely beautiful. The turquoise lagoon of the channel is shallow, the main beach that greets visitors offer many coconut trees under which to seek shadow. Guadeloupians feel that heading towards the western tip of the island gives you a real taste of a “Robinson Cruisoe” adventure, which in turn will provide you with a rare feeling of fullness and well being.

The islands of Petite Terre is a true paradise. Don’t forget the sunscreen and sunhat!

Buried Treasure: Sailing & Music

Jim Johnson serenades a local family in their canoe in Panama

Sailing & music are like eggs & bacon or rum & coke; they are best when they’re together! Music is a big part of TradeWinds sailing vacations, popular, old and new; guests’ ipods are lined up to be played over the music system on-board. With this in mind we are proud to present a dear TradeWinds friend, Jim Johnson’s newest tunes.

Jim and Jill Johnson

Inspired by the beaches of the Caribbean Sea, Pirates, Guitars & Beachfront Bars is the brainchild of TradeWinds member, singer songwriter Jim Johnson.  The self proclaimed “Island Addict” set out to write a 3 song tribute to the islands way of life.  It quickly grew to 12 songs and a full-length album was born.

Jim set out to create a rock sound that incorporated the classic rock elements of artists like The Stones, The Police and Huey Lewis with the tropical colorings of artists like Bob Marley, Shaggy, Jimmy Buffett and Kenny Chesney.  The result is a fun, energetic and world themed party album from start to finish.  A perfect addition to any  ”Fun In The Sun”  playlist.

Jim, and his wife Jill, began sailing with TradeWinds catamarans  in the fall of 2007 with a trip to Antiqua, and were instantly hooked. They have since sailed with TradeWinds to Panama and 3 trips to the BVI.  They look forward to upcoming trips to Belize and Guadeloupe with TradeWinds.

It is a fun, “Trop Rock” selection of songs inspired by our sailing vacations over the past few years. If you are looking for the perfect addition to your vacation or poolside playlist, take a listen to some of the tunes.  We challenge you not to smile and tap your toes!
